Clear Aligners
What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners offer a discreet, comfortable and effective solution for straightening teeth without the need for traditional fixed “train-track” braces.
Using advanced 3D digital technology, custom-made, removable transparent trays gradually move teeth into a more optimal position using precise and gentle pressure.
Clear aligners can be used to improve a range of common orthodontic concerns, including crowded, overlapping and spaced teeth, although suitability depends on your individual case.
How Long Does Treatment With Clear Aligners Take?
Treatment time varies depending on each individual’s case, but it typically ranges from 6 to 18 months.
For the best results, each aligner needs to be worn for at least 22 hours a day, being removed only for eating, drinking and cleaning.
Is Clear Aligner Treatment Painful?
Just like conventional fixed braces, clear aligners can cause slight discomfort at the beginning of each new stage as your teeth move into an improved position.
This is normal and is typically described as a feeling of pressure. It is a sign that the aligners are working, gradually moving your teeth towards their planned final position.
This discomfort typically goes away after a couple of days.
Am I Suitable for Teeth Straightening?
Your teeth and gums need to be healthy before you can start treatment.
If you have implants, crowns, bridges or veneers, you may still be suitable for orthodontic treatment, although your dentist will assess your individual circumstances and plan treatment accordingly.
Clear aligners can address crowded or overlapping teeth and spacing. They’re not, however, suitable for all cases, especially more complex or severe orthodontic problems, and an onward specialist referral may be recommended.
What Are Retainers and What Is Their Purpose?
Retainers help to maintain the position of your teeth after braces or aligners, ensuring that they don’t shift back towards their original position.
Wearing retainers as advised is an important part of maintaining your teeth-straightening results over the long term.
