Check Ups
The importance of regular dental check-ups
At New Road Dental Practice, our approach is centred around prevention.
Regular dental examinations allow us to monitor your oral health over time and identify potential problems when they are small and generally easier to manage.
Early detection can help prevent relatively minor problems from developing into more complex conditions that may require more extensive treatment.
Your dentist will recommend a recall interval based on your individual oral health and risk profile. For many patients, this will be somewhere between 6 and 12 months, although some patients may require more or less frequent examinations.
What happens during a routine dental examination?
During your appointment, your dentist will assess areas including:
- Your oral hygiene and any signs of plaque or calculus build-up
- Evidence of tooth decay
- Chips, cracks or other damage to the teeth
- The health and condition of your gums
- Existing fillings, crowns, bridges and dentures
- The condition and function of previous dental treatment
- Your bite and jaw alignment
- Clicking or other jaw-joint symptoms
- Signs of teeth grinding or excessive wear
- The soft tissues of your mouth
- Signs that may require further investigation, including oral cancer screening
- The jaw and neck for any unusual swellings or lumps
We also recommend regular appointments with our hygiene team where appropriate. These provide an opportunity for professional cleaning, stain removal and personalised advice to support your daily oral hygiene routine.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Dental X-rays use a very small amount of radiation.
At New Road Dental Practice, we use modern digital X-ray technology where clinically appropriate. Digital X-rays are quick, comfortable and allow us to obtain valuable diagnostic information while keeping radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
Your dentist will only recommend X-rays when they are clinically indicated and appropriate for your individual needs.
Will I receive dental treatment on the same day as my check-up?
If your examination identifies a problem that requires treatment, our reception team will discuss the next steps and arrange an appropriate appointment.
Where appointment availability and the nature of the treatment allow, it may sometimes be possible to carry out treatment on the same day.
I am nervous about visiting the dentist. Can you help?
Absolutely.
We understand that visiting the dentist can be stressful, particularly if you have had an unpleasant experience in the past.
Our team is experienced in supporting nervous patients and will take the time to listen to your concerns and explain what is happening.
We can discuss ways of making your visits more comfortable, including appropriate pain-management and anxiety-management options where suitable.
Our priority is for you to feel listened to, respected and in control throughout your visit.
