Tooth decay
Tooth decay happens when acids damage the hard outer layers of a tooth.
Over time, this damage can lead to a hole, known as a cavity.
Tooth decay is sometimes called dental decay or dental caries. They all mean the same thing.
What causes tooth decay?
Tooth decay is caused by plaque acids.
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day.
When you eat or drink foods that contain sugar, the bacteria in plaque produce acids.
These acids:
- Soften the tooth surface.
- Gradually dissolve the tooth structure.
- Can eventually create a cavity.
- If decay is not treated, it can lead to pain, infection, or tooth loss.
